How Often Should You Wash Your Duvet and Pillows?

Most of us wash our sheets and duvet covers every week or two, but the duvet and pillows underneath often go years without a proper clean. Here is a simple guide to how often to wash them, and how to get it done without wrestling a king-size duvet into a home washing machine.

Why your duvet needs cleaning

Every night a duvet absorbs a little sweat and body oil, and over time it collects dust, dust mites and skin cells. A duvet cover helps, but it does not stop everything getting through. The result is a duvet that slowly loses its loft, feels flatter and less fresh, and can make allergies worse.

How often should you wash a duvet?

  • Duvet: at least once or twice a year. Many people like to do it when they swap between summer and winter tog.

  • Pillows: every six months or so, and replace them when they no longer spring back.

  • Mattress protector: every one to two months.

  • Throws and blankets: every few months, or more often if pets use them.

If you or anyone in the house has allergies or asthma, or pets sleep on the bed, it is worth cleaning more often.

Can I wash a duvet at home?

A single duvet will often fit in a large home machine. Double, king and super king duvets usually will not. If the drum is too full the duvet cannot move freely, so it does not get properly clean or rinsed, and it is very hard to dry the middle of a thick duvet at home. A duvet that is put away slightly damp can start to smell musty.
