How to Look After Your Wedding Dress After the Big Day

A wedding dress usually comes home with a few souvenirs of the day: make-up on the neckline, a grubby hem, splashes of champagne and grass from the photographs. What you do in the first few weeks makes a real difference to how your dress looks in years to come.

1. Do not leave it too long

Many marks are invisible at first. Sugary drinks and perspiration can dry clear, then slowly turn yellow or brown over time. The sooner a dress is professionally cleaned, the better the chance of removing everything.

2. Do not try to treat stains yourself

Rubbing a stain or using household stain removers can spread it, damage delicate fabrics or leave a water ring, especially on silk and satin. Make a note of any spills you remember, such as red wine, food or grass, and tell your cleaner.

3. Store it properly until it is cleaned

Hang the dress somewhere cool, dry and dark, away from direct sunlight. Use the hanging loops sewn inside the dress so the weight of the skirt does not pull on the shoulders, and avoid plastic covers that can trap moisture.

4. Choose a specialist

Wedding dresses are often made from several delicate fabrics, with lace, beading and embellishment that need careful handling. Our wedding dress cleaning service inspects every gown by hand before planning the right treatment, and we can also preserve it so it stays safe for years.

5. Do not forget the rest of the wedding party

Bridesmaid dresses, suits and veils benefit from cleaning too, and our tailors can alter occasion wear if a dress is being worn again.

Bring your dress to our shops in Heaton, Gosforth, Low Fell or Hexham, or book a collection from anywhere in the areas we cover.
