Student Laundry in Newcastle: A Simple Guide for Term Time

Moving into halls or a shared house in Jesmond, Heaton or Sandyford often means doing your own washing for the first time, usually with a shared machine and nowhere to dry anything. A few simple habits make it much easier, and save you money too.

Sort before you wash

  • Wash darks and lights separately, and keep new jeans and anything red on their own for the first few washes.

  • Check pockets for tissues, lip balm and bank cards.

  • Turn printed T-shirts and jeans inside out to protect the print and colour.

Read the care label

Most everyday clothes are fine at 30°C, which is cheaper to run and gentler on fabric. Use 40°C to 60°C for towels, bedding and gym kit. Anything marked "dry clean only", such as a suit or a formal dress, should stay out of the machine.

Do not overload the machine

Clothes need room to move to get clean. A full drum rather than a packed one rinses better, smells fresher and comes out less creased.

Dry clothes properly

Damp washing on a radiator in a small room is a common cause of musty smells and mould in student houses. Hang clothes with space between them, open a window if you can, and never leave wet washing sitting in the machine overnight.

Bedding and towels

Wash sheets and pillowcases every week or two, and towels after three or four uses. Duvets need washing a couple of times a year, which is hard to do in a home machine, so see our duvet cleaning service.

Smart clothes for interviews and nights out

A properly pressed shirt makes a difference at an interview, placement or graduation. Our shirt and ironing service and dry cleaning are available at all four of our shops.

When you would rather not do it yourself

Our student laundry service takes the whole job off your hands. Drop your washing at one of our shops and collect it washed, dried and neatly folded, or book collection and delivery from your door. Wash, dry and fold starts from £22 for up to 6kg. Our Heaton and Gosforth shops are the closest to Jesmond and the city centre universities.
